About Ruta

Ruta Jouniari, a Sarasota businesswoman, small farmer, and community health advocate, is running in the Democratic primary for State House District 72 in a special election scheduled for Dec. 5, 2017.

After earning a B.S. in Finance and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, Ruta began her career with Aetna U.S. Healthcare, developing markets in Boston and Tampa. She fought for years to lower premium costs for consumers and knows how insurance companies operate to maximize their own profits.

Fifteen years ago, Ruta changed her professional focus and founded her own company, International Staffing Group, Inc., a company that works with the federal government to place veterans in good jobs that allow them to utilize their specialized skills.

Then, a year ago, Ruta co-founded the Universal Crescent Clinic, a non-profit organization that provides 100% free health care to people without insurance in Sarasota County. Ruta currently serves on the organization’s board of directors and volunteers at the clinic on Saturdays.

Ruta is the Boston-born daughter of Lithuanian immigrants. She lives in Sarasota with her husband of 17 years and her 96-year-old mother for whom she provides primary care.
